Before attempting any type of cleaning, you need to begin by gently blotting up as much of soy sauce as possible. You should use a white cloth or paper towel for this step, as colored materials may transfer their own dye onto fabric. Keep blotting until no more liquid transfers onto the cloth.
Using a spray bottle, create a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Lightly spray the stain with the solution and let the fabric soak for several minutes. This will help to loosen and dissolve any remaining soy sauce residue.
Once you’ve pre-treated stain with vinegar, it’s time for a regular wash. For delicate fabrics like velvet, it’s best to opt for a gentle cycle and use cool water. Let the fabric air dry after the washing machine is finished, and then inspect the area for any remaining stains.
If you find that the stain still hasn’t completely faded away, you may need to break out a harsher spot cleaning product such as a carpet foam cleaner or even rubbing alcohol. Make sure you do a test on a small, hidden portion of fabric to ensure it does not cause any damage.
It may take several rounds of treatment and washing to completely remove a soy sauce stain from velvet fabrics. Don’t give up if it seems like the stain isn’t coming out, since it often requires several attempts to completely remove all evidence of the spill.
