How to Easily Remove Soy Sauce Stains from Traditional Dress

Ah, soy sauce. It makes your favorite dishes so savory and delicious. But, unfortunately, it can cause a bit of a mess when it spills onto clothes. In particular, traditional clothing, such as kimonos or yukatas, can be tricky to clean—especially when they become stained with soy sauce.

Don’t despair! With a few easy steps, you can remove that pesky soy sauce stain from traditional attire. Here are our top tips for getting your garment looking good as new:

Step 1: Blot the Stain

As soon as possible after a soy sauce spill, begin to blot the stain with a clean cloth. The goal should be to remove as much of the soy sauce as possible without spreading it further. Don’t rub; this will only push the sauce deeper into the fabric.

Step 2: Soak Garment

If the stain is large or does not come out using the blotting technique, try soaking fabric in cold water and a small amount of laundry detergent. Allow fabric to soak for several hours, then rinse with cold water.

Step 3: Try a Stain Remover

If the stain persists, use a stain remover specific to the type of fabric the garment is made out of. Apply the stain remover directly to the stained area and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 4: Wash as Usual

Once you have treated the stain, you can wash the garment as you normally would. Opt for a gentle cycle on washing machine, and if possible, hang the garment to dry.
