What You’ll Need
- White vinegar
- Warm water
- Light detergent (such as Woolite or Dreft)
- Stain removal product (such as Borax, OxiClean, or Shout)
- Hot iron
Instructions
- Run cold water gently over the area of stain for a few minutes. Blot the area with a clean cloth to absorb any excess moisture.
- Mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a bowl.
- Soak a clean cloth in the solution and apply it directly to the stain. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Launder the garment according to the manufacturer’s tag instructions using light detergent. If the stain is still visible, add a stain-removal product such as Borax, OxiClean, or Shout to the wash cycle.
- After washing, check the stain. If it is still visible, use a hot iron on the area for a few minutes.
Tips
- For best results, try to act quickly after soy sauce spills on your clothing – the longer stain sets in, the harder it will be to remove.
- Be sure to check garments for colorfastness before applying the vinegar and water solution – this could cause fading on more delicate fabrics.
- If the soy sauce stain is still visible after laundering, try treating the area with a stain removal product before ironing.
