When a soy sauce stain appears on silk, the best way to proceed is to act quickly. Without immediate attention, soy sauce can easily penetrate the fabric and become much more difficult to remove. First, dab the stain with a cloth or cotton ball soaked in cold water to remove as much of the liquid as possible.
Next, blend a teaspoon of mild detergent with 1 cup of room temperature water, then sponge the solution onto stain. Rinse thoroughly with cold water, then repeat if necessary.
If the stain persists, rub non-acetone fingernail polish remover into the stain, then rinse well. Repeat if needed, but do not use nail polish remover if the garment has been colorfast treated.
Finally, take garment to a professional cleaner for extra help in removing the stain. As always, it’s best to adhere to the cleaning instructions on the tag, so read carefully before proceeding.
With these tips, you can restore your silk dupioni garments to their original luster and avoid the disappointment of throwing them away.
