Once you notice a soy sauce stain on your business attire, it’s important to act fast. Start by blotting up as much sauce as you can using a dry cloth or paper towel. Blot in an outward, circular motion so you don’t spread the sauce further. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the stain too harshly—this could cause permanent damage to the fabric.
Create a mixture of liquid detergent and water and apply it directly onto the soy sauce stain using a sponge. Apply gentle pressure as you rub the stained area and rinse it with cold water afterward. This should help to remove some of the stain. Repeat this process until stain lightens or disappears.
If stain persists after following steps one and two, try applying a mixture of vinegar and water to affected area. Again, use a sponge to rub mixture into the fabric and then rinse the garment with cold water. Be sure to test the vinegar solution on a hidden area first to make sure it won’t harm the fabric.
For tough stains that won’t budge, grab a commercial spot cleaner and follow the instructions on the package. These cleaners are specifically designed to treat hard-to-remove stains like soy sauce, and they are often effective on business attire materials such as wool or linen.
In cases where the soy sauce stain seems to be resistant to all of above methods, you may want to take your garment to a professional cleaner. They will be able to provide specific advice given your garment’s make-up and material, and they have access to more powerful tools and products.
