What You'll Need

  • Mild laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Rubbing alcohol or spot remover
  • Clean, soft cloths

Step 1: Blot Liquid Stains

If shoe polish stain is still damp, use a clean, absorbent cloth to blot the area. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the velvet fabric. This may cause it to pill.

Step 2: Test Spot Cleaner

In a hidden area of the fabric, try gently rubbing rubbing alcohol or a store-bought spot remover as a test. If the velvet is damaged in any way, do not attempt this step.

Step 3: Mix Detergent and Water

Mix one teaspoon of mild laundry detergent with one cup of warm water. Use a clean cloth to apply the mixture to stained area, blotting the area.

Step 4: Rinse

Rinse the area with lukewarm water and a clean cloth.

Step 5: Apply Vinegar Solution

Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of lukewarm water. Using a clean cloth, dab the mixture onto the stained area.

Step 6: Pat Dry

Use a clean, dry cloth to pat the area dry.

Step 7: Air Dry

Allow the fabric to air dry completely before use.
