Shoe polish stains can be some of toughest to remove from clothing, especially if they’ve been on there for a while. Luckily, with the right tools and a bit of elbow grease, you can easily get rid of shoe polish marks on your trench coat.
As soon as you notice a shoe polish stain on your trench coat, take garment off and lay it flat. Then, take a soft cloth or brush and dab at the stain to remove any excess shoe polish. This will help reduce the size of the stain and make it easier to remove later on.
Once you’ve removed excess shoe polish, mix up a cleaning solution. To do this, combine equal parts laundry detergent and white vinegar in a bucket. You can also add a few tablespoons of baking soda to the mixture to make the solution even stronger.
Now that you have cleaning solution ready, use a soft cloth or brush to apply it to stained area. Leave it to soak for at least 30 minutes so the solution can penetrate the fabric and break down the stain. After the stain has had time to soak, rinse the garment with cold water to remove the cleaning solution.
When the stain has been rinsed away, place the trench coat in the washing machine. Add a scoop of laundry detergent and wash garment on the gentle cycle using cold water. Once the cycle is finished, check the settled area of garment and see if the stain has been completely removed.
Finally, once the garment has been washed, hang it up to dry. Avoid using direct heat, such as a dryer, to prevent shrinking or further damage. Be sure to inspect the garment again after it’s fully dry to make sure the stain has been removed.
