Materials Needed

  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Toothbrush or clean rag
  • Laundry detergent

Step 1: Pre-Treat with Dish Soap and White Vinegar

Start by making a paste with equal parts dish soap and white vinegar. Use this paste to treat the shoe polish stain before laundering. Apply it to the fabric using a scrub brush or clean rag. Allow the paste to sit on the stain for 10 minutes.

Step 2: Scrub Away Excess Stain with a Toothbrush

Once paste has had time to work, use a toothbrush to lightly scrub away any remaining shoe polish. Be gentle as you scrub, and do not rub fabric too hard.

Step 3: Wash in Cold Water

When you have removed as much of the shoe polish as possible, launder your garment in cold water using laundry detergent. Make sure to turn your garment inside out and wash with like colors. After laundering, check the garment for any remaining stains. If there are still some traces, repeat steps above.

Step 4: Hang to Dry

Finally, hang the garment to dry naturally. Do not put it in the dryer, as this may set any remaining stains.
