Step 1: Identify the Stains

The type and color of shoe shine you're trying to remove will affect the cleaning method. Darker shoe shines such as black, brown, and red are typically easier to remove than lighter colors like yellow, white, and beige. Give the stain a thorough inspection to determine the best way forward.

Step 2: Blot or Scrape Away Excess Product

Depending on size of stain, use a dry cloth to blot away as much of the shoe polish as possible. Alternatively, you can gently scrape away any excess product using a blunt knife or a spoon. Make sure you scrape away from the fabric so you don't spread the stain any further.

Step 3: Pre-treat with Detergent

It is always a good idea to pre-treat a stubborn stain before putting it in the wash. Apply a small amount of detergent directly to the stained area and let it sit for five minutes. This should help loosen the shoe polish and make it much easier to remove.

Step 4: Wash in Machine

Once you have pre-treated the stain, put the sweatshirt in the washing machine. Choose a cold water cycle and add a few tablespoons of more detergent if you think it’s necessary. To ensure the stain is completely removed, use a whitening or brightening laundry detergent.
