Materials Needed

  • A cloth
  • Hairspray
  • Dish soap
  • Laundry Detergent
  • White Vinegar

Steps to Remove Shoe Polish Stains from Your Skirt

  1. Dab the affected area with a clean cloth to absorb as much of the shoe polish as possible.
  2. Spray hairspray directly onto the stain and immediately blot the spot with a clean and damp cloth. The hairspray will break down the shoe polish and help lift it from fabric.
  3. If the shoe polish stain persists, apply a few drops of dish soap into the affected area. Allow the soap to sit for a few minutes before scrubbing it off using a clean cloth and water.
  4. If the stain remains, mix a teaspoon of laundry detergent into a cup of warm water, then dab it onto the stain. Let it sit for several minutes before rinsing the area with cold water.
  5. For particularly stubborn stains, mix together equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl. Apply mixture to stain and scrub it with a cloth until it lifts away.
  6. When the stain is gone, rinse the area with cold water and allow it to air dry. You may also use a hairdryer to accelerate the drying process.

Tips & Tricks

  • Always be sure to test a small part of the fabric before using any cleaning solution to ensure it won't discolor your skirt.
  • Use a clean cloth instead of a paper towel as it can be more abrasive and cause further damage to the fabric.
  • If the stain persists, take skirt to a professional dry cleaner for additional assistance.
