What You'll Need

  • A bowl or bucket
  • Lukewarm water
  • Mild detergent or soap
  • Cotton swabs
  • Paper towels

Step 1 - Pre-Treat the Stain

The first step is to pre-treat the stain. Take a cotton swab, dip it in lukewarm water, and gently dab at the stain. This will help to break down shoe polish and make it easier to remove. Make sure not to rub too hard, as this could spread the stain even further.

Step 2 - Soak the Stain

Once you've pre-treated the stain with the cotton swab, it's time to soak it. Fill up a bowl or bucket with lukewarm water and add a mild detergent or soap. Submerge the stained fabric beneath the sudsy water and let it sit for at least 10 minutes.

Step 3 - Rinse and Dry

Once the fabric has finished soaking, gently rinse the area with lukewarm water. Do not wring out the fabric, as this could cause the stain to spread or weaken the fibers. Pat the area dry with paper towels, making sure to blot away any excess liquid.

Step 4 - Repeat As Necessary

If the stain is still present after the initial treatment, repeat Steps 1-3 until it is fully removed. For particularly stubborn stains, it may be necessary to take the clothing to dry cleaner.
