What You'll Need

To remove shoe polish stains from silk taffeta, you will need access to a few household items:

  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Glycerin
  • Absorbent cloths or paper towels

Step 1: Pre-Treat the Stain

Begin by pre-treating the stain with dishwashing liquid. Gently rub the dishwashing liquid into the stain using a cloth or paper towel. Let this sit for a few minutes to allow the soap to penetrate the stain.

Step 2: Launder the Fabric

Once the stain has been pre-treated, launder the fabric as usual with warm water and laundry detergent. Be sure to check the care label on the garment to ensure that you are laundering it properly.

Step 3: Check the Stain Again

After laundering, check the stain again. If it hasn't completely disappeared, repeat steps 1 and 2.

Step 4: Use White Vinegar and Glycerin

If the stain is still visible, try using a mixture of white vinegar and glycerin. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and glycerin and apply it to the stain with a cloth or paper towel. Allow the mixture to sit on stain for a few minutes then rinse it off with cool water.

Step 5: Repeat as Necessary

If the stain is still visible, repeat steps 1-4 until it is completely gone. With the right combination of pre-treatment, laundering, and spot cleaning, you can get rid of shoe polish stains from your silk taffeta fabric.
