Get Rid of Dried Shoe Polish Stains on Silk Dupioni Like a Pro

Important Things to Know Before Cleaning

  • Know the type of shoe polish stain you have. There are two types: wet and dry.
  • Test any cleaning method on an inconspicuous area of fabric first before proceeding.
  • Read the care instructions for the item to make sure the methods used won't damage it.
  • If the item is expensive or irreplaceable, it might be wise to take it to a professional cleaner.

Removing Wet Shoe Polish Stains from Silk Dupioni

  1. First, dab the affected area with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much of the stain as you can.
  2. Dampen a cloth with cold water and then use the cloth to blot the area.
  3. Carefully wipe the area with a cloth dampened with a solution of one teaspoon of white vinegar and one tablespoon of gentle, liquid detergent in one quart of cold water.
  4. Rinse the area with cool water.
  5. If the stain is still present, repeat steps 3 and 4 until it is gone.
  6. Gently dab the area with a dry cloth, then place item flat in front of a fan to air dry.

Removing Dry Shoe Polish Stains from Silk Dupioni

  1. Carefully scrape off the excess shoe polish from the affected area.
  2. Dampen a cloth with a solution of one teaspoon of laundering ammonia and one tablespoon of mild, liquid detergent in one quart of warm water.
  3. Gently rub the cloth over the area.
  4. Rinse area with cool water.
  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the stain is gone.
  6. Gently dab the area with a dry cloth and air dry.

Other Options

  • Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with a quarter cup of cold water to make a paste and rub it gently over the stain.
  • Apply a few drops of rubbing alcohol directly to the stain and rub it gently with a soft cloth.
