To start, gather the following materials:
If possible, treat the stain as soon as you spot it. This way, you reduce the chances that the stain will set more deeply into the fabric over time.
Using a damp cloth, blot the stained area to remove any excess shoe polish. Do not rub stain as this will only spread it further. Instead, use a gentle dabbing motion and switch to a clean section of the cloth as needed.
In a bowl, mix together 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with 1 cup of warm water. Stir well to combine.
Soak a sponge in cleaning solution and use it to gently scrub the stained area. Do not rub too hard as you may damage fabric. When finished, let the soap solution sit for 10 minutes before rinsing.
Rinse the stained area with cold water. If needed, repeat steps 4 and 5 until the stain has been removed.
If the stain persists, you can try applying ammonia to it. Mix together 1 teaspoon of ammonia with 1 cup of warm water. Then, soak a sponge in the mixture and gently dab the stained area. Let the ammonia solution sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.
If stain is still visible, you can try treating the fabric with a white vinegar solution. Combine 1 part white vinegar with 2 parts warm water and mix vigorously. Then, using a dampened sponge, apply the solution to the stained area. Finally, rinse the area with cold water.
Once you have finished removing the stain, let the item air dry before wearing or storing.
