Easy and Effective Tips for Removing Shoe Polish Stains from Poplin

Poplin fabrics are commonly used to make dress shirts, blouses, linings, and other garments due to their soft feel and luxurious look. But removing shoe polish stains from poplin can be tricky. If not treated properly, stain can set in and become permanent.

1. Start by gently scraping off any excess polish with a spoon or dull knife. Do not rub the area as this may spread the stain further into the fabric.
2. Create a solution of one tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent and two cups of warm water. Gently dab the stained area with the solution using a clean cloth. Make sure to blot and not rub the fabric as this may cause stain to spread.
3. Rinse the area with cold water and then apply a pretreatment solvent such as rubbing alcohol or hairspray.
4. Mix one teaspoon of ammonia into one cup of warm water and gently dab stained area with solution until the stain has lifted.
5. Rinse the area with cold water. Then, place a clean cloth or paper towel underneath the stain and press it with a warm iron.
6. Repeat the process until the stain is gone. To avoid further damage, never put iron directly on the fabric.
7. Once the stain is gone, rinse the area with cold water and then launder the garment according to the fabric care instructions on label.
