What You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Paper towel
  • Cotton swabs
  • Baking soda
  • Clean paper towels
  • Warm water
  • Liquid detergent

Steps for Cleaning the Stain

  1. Dab the stain gently with a paper towel or cotton swab dipped in white vinegar. Be sure to use a light touch, as pressing too hard can spread the shoe polish.
  2. Let the vinegar work into the stain for a few minutes.
  3. Mix a small amount of baking soda with warm water to make a paste. Apply the paste directly to the stained area and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Gently massage the paste into the fabric to help break down shoe polish.
  5. Rinse away the paste using clean, warm water.
  6. Apply a small amount of liquid detergent directly to the stain and rub it in lightly.
  7. Rinse detergent off the fabric and blot dry.
  8. If stain is still visible, repeat steps 1-7 until it is completely gone.
