Before you start cleaning, it's important to know what type of fabric the overalls are made from. Different fabrics require different cleaning treatments. For example, if the overalls are made from cotton, you can machine wash them with detergent. If they’re made from a delicate fabric like silk or wool, it’s best to hand-wash them.
Once you’ve identified the fabric, you can begin pre-treating the stain. Fill a small bowl or sink with warm water and add a few drops of liquid laundry detergent. Mix the detergent into the water until it is fully dissolved. Soak stained area in the solution for 10 minutes. Then, gently massage fabric around the stain, using your fingers to work the detergent into the fibers.
When the 10 minutes is up, you can begin washing the overall. If the fabric is machine-washable, put it in the washing machine with a gentle detergent and run it on a delicate cycle. For delicate fabrics, hand-wash the overall in a sink using the same detergent solution from Step 2. Once the overall is finished washing, let it air dry on a clothesline or drying rack.
If the stain is still there after washing, you can try repeating Steps 2 and 3 one or two more times. If the stain persists, you may need to use a stronger cleaning agent such as rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Always test an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it won’t damage the fabric.
Cleaning shoe polish stains from overalls isn’t always easy, but with the right materials and some elbow grease, you can get your overalls looking like new again. With a little patience and persistence, you can save your favorite overalls from the trash!
