When it comes to cleaning shoe polish stains off nylon, key is to act quickly. The faster you can treat the stain, the less likely it is to set into the fabric. You'll want to start by gently scraping away excess polish from the surface of the fabric. Then, launder the garment as instructed on the tag.
If the item is dry-clean only, you'll need to take it to a professional cleaner who has experience dealing with such stains. If stain persists, then use some gentle laundry detergent on stain and rub it in with a soft-bristled brush. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with cold water.
For tougher shoe polish stains, such as those that have been dried on for a while, you might need to try applying a spot remover like Shout or Spray 'n Wash. Spray the area liberally and allow it to sit for 15 minutes before laundering, as directed.
For better results, consider using a pre-treater like Zout. Apply the liquid to the soiled area, scrub in with a soft-bristled brush, and let it sit for one hour before laundering. This should help loosen the stain so it can be washed away more easily.
When laundering with detergent or pre-treater, be sure to use the hottest water setting recommended on the care label. For an extra cleaning power boost, you can add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to washing machine. This will help tackle tough stains and break down soap residue.
Finally, always hang dry your nylon garments, as using the dryer can cause the fabric to shrink or become stiff. Following these tips should help you get those annoying shoe polish stains out of your nylon garments and have them looking like new again!
