Before taking any action, it’s important to identify the type of fabric in your maxi dress. You should only use this cleaning method on 100% cotton or synthetic fabrics; if your dress is made of silk or wool, take it to a professional cleaner as soon as possible.

The good news is, if you do have a maxi dress made of cotton or synthetic fibers, you can easily clean it in comfort of your own home. To start, mix 1 teaspoon of mild detergent with 2 cups of lukewarm water. Do not use a scrubbing brush or abrasive sponge as this can damage the fibers of the fabric. Instead, use a soft cloth or cotton pad to apply soapy mixture to the stained area in a gentle circular motion.

After you have removed as much of the shoe polish as possible, rinse the maxi dress with cold running water. If a few stubborn stains remain, try soaking the dress in distilled white vinegar for 30 minutes to dissolve them. Finally, rinse the maxi dress one more time and hang it to dry.

At the end of the process, your maxi dress should look brand new again! With right instructions, cleaning shoe polish off of maxi dresses doesn’t have to be an impossible task. So save that dress and get ready to rock it!
