First, start by identifying as much of the shoe polish on the mattress as quickly as possible. Once the stain has been identified, grab a few paper towels and fold them into small squares. Dip the paper towel into warm water and blot the affected area gently, be sure not to rub it so that you don’t aggravate the stain further. If the stain persists, you may need to use a deeper cleaning approach.

Create a solution of 1/4-cup white vinegar mixed with 1 cup of water, then generously apply it to the affected area. Let sit for 15 minutes before blotting vinegar away with more paper towels. After vinegar has dried, sprinkle baking soda over the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes.

Fill a spray bottle with 3 parts water and 1 part liquid dish detergent, and spritz affected area of mattress. Scrub affected area gently with a cloth or toothbrush. Finally, you’ll want to rinse out the detergent with a damp cloth. Try to blot as much of the moisture up as possible, and then set a fan near area to help it dry faster.

Once the area is completely dry, vacuum away the excess baking soda. By following these steps, you’ll be able to effectively clean your mattress from shoe polish stains and be back in bed in no time.
