Choose the Right Cleaning Material

Using wrong cleaning material could damage your clothing item, so it’s important to choose the right one. For shoe polish stains on cotton poplin, you should use a soft washcloth. A sponge might be too rough for delicate fabrics.

Add Stain Remover & Warm Water

Mix a little mild detergent or stain remover with warm water into a bowl. Dip the washcloth into the mixture and gently dab at the affected area. Be sure to apply enough pressure so that the solution penetrates the fabric.

Work the Solution in With a Toothbrush

Once you’ve dabbed the solution onto the area, use a soft toothbrush to work it into the fabric. This will help to loosen any stubborn areas of dirt or grime. Make sure to brush all over the stained area.

Rinse With Cold Water

After working the solution in, rinse the fabric with cold water. You can either rinse it in the sink or with a spray bottle. Then, blot the area dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.

Launder and Dry as Usual

Cotton is relatively easy to care for, so after pre-treating the stain, you can launder and dry the item just as you usually would. Keep an eye on the fabric for any signs of colour fading or bleeding.

Repeat if Necessary

If the stain is still visible after the first go, it may be necessary to repeat the process. Don’t overuse detergent or stain remover, as this could damage the fabric.
