Step 1: Let the Stain Set

If the shoe polish is still wet, you should by all means act fast, but in most cases you will want to let the stain set a bit before proceeding. This gives cloth time to absorb grease and makes for easier removal later on.

Step 2: Apply Grease-Cutting Detergent

Now it's time to apply some grease-cutting detergent to the area affected by the shoe polish. If you have a pre-treatment solution, that will work best, but liquid laundry detergent is also effective. Spread detergent onto the stain and let it sit for five to ten minutes.

Step 3: Rinse & Wipe Away

Once detergent has had a chance to work its magic, you'll want to rinse away the solution. Use a damp cloth to gently wipe the area until it is free of detergent. If stain persists, repeat the process as necessary.

Step 4: Wash According to Instructions

Finally, you'll need to wash the garment according to its own instructions. Set the machine to a gentle cycle, cold water wash, and normal spin speed. Add detergent as instructed and press start button.
