When you first notice the shoe polish stains, it’s important to act quickly! Refrain from putting the cardigan in the washer or dryer as this can set the stains and make them even harder to get out. Instead, begin by blotting the area with a damp cloth to remove any excess shoe polish.

Next, create a solution of equal parts white vinegar and cold water. Using a clean sponge or cloth, dab the solution on the stain. This helps to break down the shoe polish, making it easier to remove. After applying the vinegar and water solution, gently scrub the stained area using a toothbrush. Then, rinse the cardigan with cold water.

If the shoe polish stains still remain, try using a few drops of liquid dish soap in a bowl of cold water. Soak the stained area in the mixture for 10-15 minutes before dabbing it with a damp cloth. After that, rinse the area with cold water using a soft cloth.

For more stubborn shoe polish stains, “spot-cleaning” may be necessary. To do this, apply a solvent cleaner to the stains and blot with a damp cloth. It’s important to be gentle so as not to damage the fabric. Depending on fabric of your cardigan, a specialized cleaning detergent may be necessary. Be sure to check the care label on your cardigan before using any products.

Once you’ve removed the shoe polish stains, make sure to hang your cardigan up to dry. Avoid using a clothes dryer or iron as this can damage the fabric and cause the shoe polish stains to reappear.
