What Do I Need to Remove Shoe Polish Stains?

Before you get to work cleaning those pesky shoe polish stains, you'll need a few items. Gather up some white vinegar, a small container, a soft cloth or old t-shirt, a laundry detergent, and a clean, soft brush.

Steps for Cleaning Shoe Polish Stains from Your Business Suit

  1. Fill the small container with one part white vinegar and two parts warm water.
  2. Dip soft cloth or t-shirt into the white vinegar mixture and blot stain. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the stain as this could damage fabric of your suit.
  3. Once the stain has been blotted, rinse the area with cold water. This removes any traces of the vinegar-water mixture that may have been left behind.
  4. Using a small amount of laundry detergent and soft brush, gently scrub stained area in a circular motion. Rinse fabric with cold water once the stain is gone.
  5. Allow the suit to air dry naturally or carefully use a clothes dryer on the ‘low’ setting.

Quick Tip: Apply the Solution Directly to Stains

If the stain is particularly stubborn, you can try applying the white vinegar solution directly to the stain. Let it soak for a few minutes before continuing with the above steps.

Preventing Future Shoe Polish Stains

It's always easier to prevent the stains in the first place! If you're polishing your dress shoes near your business suit, place a old towel between the shoes and the suit to protect it from any splashes of shoe polish.
