Step 1: Apply a Cleaning Solution

If the shoe polish stain is fresh, you can typically reduce or remove the stain by applying a cleaning solution. You can make a homemade solution using a teaspoon of white vinegar in two cups of warm water. Blot the stained area of your clothing with a clean cloth dampened in the vinegar solution.

Step 2: Pre-treat the Stain

For tougher shoe polish stains, you will want to pre-treat the affected area prior to washing your clothing. Begin by applying a stain remover directly on the stain, like a laundry pre-treater. Allow the pre-treatment to set for a few minutes before washing item.

Step 3: Washing Clothing

Wash garment as you normally would, preferably in cold or lukewarm water. Make sure to use a gentle detergent designed for delicates, and try not to use too much detergent, since this can leave residue on fabric that may cause discoloration.

Step 4: Inspect the Stain

After the garment has been washed and dried, inspect the area to determine whether or not the stain has been removed. If it’s still visible, repeat Steps 1-3 until stain is gone. If the stain hasn’t budged after multiple attempts, consider taking the garment to a professional cleaner.

Additional Tips

  • Always use a clean cloth when dabbing at the stain; a dirty cloth may only spread the stain further.
  • Be sure to read care label on your garment for instructions on how best to clean it.
  • Change the cleaning solution frequently so as not to re-apply dirt from the previous application.
