Oil stains on clothes, especially t-shirts, are a common problem. The oils from scissors or other tools you use can easily get transferred to your shirt and leave a visible mark. Fortunately, there are a few easy steps to take to help remove oil from your t-shirt.

Step 1: Blot the Stain

The first step for removing an oil stain from your t-shirt is to blot it with a dry cotton cloth. This step helps to absorb some of the oil and prevent it from seeping further into the fabric. Once you have finished blotting the stain, turn over the cloth and press it against the back of the t-shirt to remove more of oily residue.

Step 2: Sprinkle Cornstarch on the Stain

Once you have removed as much of oil as possible with a dry cloth, the next step is to sprinkle cornstarch, baking soda, or talcum powder onto the stain. These substances work to absorb remaining oil and help lift the stain away from fabric.

Step 3: Let Sit & Rinse

Allow cornstarch, baking soda, or talcum powder to sit on the stain for 15 minutes to soak up any residual oil. For tougher stains, you can use a mixture of equal parts cornstarch and water and let the mixture sit for 30 minutes or longer. Then wash the t-shirt in warm, soapy water. The stain should be gone.
