Step 1: Blot the Stain

Start by blotting stained area with a paper towel or a clean cloth. Continue blotting until all of the liquid has been absorbed. Do not rub the stain; doing so may cause it to spread.

Step 2: Use a Soap Solution

Create a mixture of liquid dishwashing soap and warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution, then dab it onto the stained area. Allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes before washing fabric as normal.

Step 3: Rinse Well

After washing, rinse the fabric thoroughly. If any of the oil stains remain, repeat steps 1-3 until the stain is completely gone.

Step 4: Repeat as Needed

If the stain persists, try adding baking soda to the solution. Sprinkle one teaspoon of baking soda onto the stained fabric, then add one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap. Rub the fabric together to form a lather, then rinse the fabric thoroughly. Repeat this step until stain is gone.

Tips for Preventing Future Stains

  • Always wash scissors immediately after use to prevent oils from setting into the fabric.
  • Be sure to wear an apron when working with scissors to protect your clothing from oil stains.
  • If an oil stain does occur, act quickly to remove it, as oil stains set quickly.
