The first step is to scrape off any excess oil from the stain. Use a spoon or dull knife to carefully scrape away oil, being careful not to spread it around. It’s important not to press too hard, as this could damage or tear fabric.
We then need to dissolve the remaining oil. Make a cleaning solution by mixing equal parts of dishwashing liquid and white vinegar in a bowl. Place your stained item in the solution and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
After the 10 minutes are up, take an old toothbrush and gently scrub the stain in circular motions. This will help to break down and remove the oil. Rinse the item in lukewarm water to remove the remaining solution.
If you’re still seeing traces of stain, try using a laundry pre-treatment spray on the area. Spray the pre-treatment onto the stained area, then let it sit for 10 minutes.
Next, put the item in the washing machine with a mild detergent. Wash the item on a cold cycle with other items of a similar color. Do not place the item in dryer until you’re sure all the stain is gone.
Finally, if the stain still persists after following all of these steps, it may be time to take item to a professional dry cleaner.
