The first step to successfully removing oil stains is to act fast! Use a paper towel or cloth to blot up as much of the oil as possible. Be sure not to rub it in, as this will only spread the stain further.

Next, make a paste using baking soda and water. Rub the paste into stained area, let it sit for 15 minutes, and then wash with cold water. Repeat the process without the baking soda if necessary.

If the stain is still there after you’ve tried baking soda and water, try dish soap or laundry detergent. For dish soap, mix 1 teaspoon of detergent with 2 cups of warm water, apply the detergent to the stained area, and allow it to sit for 30 minutes before washing with cold water.

For laundry detergent, use 1/2 cup of liquid detergent per gallon of warm water. Soak the shirt in detergent for an hour and then launder as usual. This method works best on light-colored shirts since bleach is often part of the detergent solution.

Finally, you can also use a specialized oil removal product, such as Goo Gone. Apply product directly to the stain, wait 10 minutes for it to erase the stain, and then rinse with water.

If all else fails, the best option may be to take the polo shirt to a dry cleaner. Professionals have special tools and techniques that can help remove tough stains.
