Identifying Scissors Oil on Your Oxfords

Stains from scissors oil are identified as dry, greyish patches on surfaces of the leather. Sometimes they appear as dark spots that look like ink. When touched with a damp cloth, they often leave a greasy sensation. These stains cannot be removed with a simple shoe cleaning solution or cloth.

Removing the Stain

The first step in removing scissors oil stains is to thoroughly clean the affected area. Use a soft cloth and a gentle detergent such as dish soap. Dip the cloth in water, wring it out and then lightly scrub the stain. Don't use too much water, as this can cause the leather to become warped. Once the area is clean, blot it dry with a separate cloth.

Once the area is clean, you can use a commercial product such as saddle soap or leather cleaner to remove the stain. To do this, apply the product according to manufacturer instructions, then gently rub it into stain in a circular motion. You can also use a small amount of white vinegar diluted with warm water to break down the oily residue. Leave the cleaner or vinegar mixture on stain for several minutes then wipe off with a soft cloth.

Finally, you can use a commercial leather conditioner to bring moisture back to the leather and help prevent further damage. Apply the conditioner in a thin layer, working it into leather with a sponge. Let the conditioner sit for several minutes and then buff it in. Don't forget to check interior of the shoe for any remaining stains.

Preventing Further Damage

To protect your Oxfords from further damage, avoid contact with liquids, chemicals and scissors oil. Treat your shoes regularly with a quality leather conditioner and always use a shoehorn when putting your shoes on. Store your shoes in a cool, dry place and always use shoe trees or crepe paper to maintain their shape.
