What You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • Borax or baking soda
  • Clean cloth
  • White vinegar

Instructions

  1. Start by dabbing area with a damp cloth to remove as much of the oil stain as possible. Don’t rub the area as it can cause the stain to spread further.
  2. Mix equal parts of dish soap and white vinegar in a bowl. If you don’t have white vinegar on hand, substitute it with lemon juice.
  3. Apply the mixture on affected area using a clean cloth. Make sure to saturate the cloth completely so that the solution can penetrate the fibers of the fabric.
  4. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes before you start scrubbing the area gently. You can use an old toothbrush to remove any stubborn areas.
  5. Rinse area thoroughly until all of the soap mixture is removed.
  6. If there are still traces of stain left, mix 1/4 cup of Borax or baking soda with one quart of warm water. Soak the stained area in the solution for 30 minutes and then rinse with clean water.

Tips and Warnings

  • Test the cleaning solution on a small, hidden area before applying it to stain to make sure it won’t damage the fabric.
  • Avoid using bleach or other harsh chemicals as they can discolor the fabric.
