Cleaning Oil Stains from Your Outerwear: A Step-by-Step Guide

When scissors oil stains end up on your outerwear, follow this simple guide to remove them without damaging the fabric.

Depending on how much time has passed since the oil stain occurred, you may be able to tackle it with a simple washing and drying in the laundry at home. Start by turning the garment inside out to protect any embellishments. Then, dampen the stained area with cold water to dilute the oil.

Apply a small amount of liquid detergent to the spot, and use a cloth or soft bristle brush to gently rub it into the fabric. Thoroughly rinse the stained area with cold water and then place it in the wash with similar colors on gentle cycle. After washing, be sure to check if the stain is completely gone before placing the garment in the dryer. If not, repeat the process until stain is removed.

If the oil stains have been there for a long time and you’ve already dried the garment in the dryer, you can still remove them. Start by putting some liquid detergent directly on the stain and allow it to soak for about 20 minutes. As detergent penetrates fabric, you can use a toothbrush or soft-bristled brush to work detergent into the stain.

Once that’s done, pour some white vinegar onto the stained area and let it sit for an additional 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water, and then launder the garment as usual. Again, check if stain is gone before putting it in the dryer.

If the stain persists, you may need to use a solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Place a small amount of rubbing alcohol directly onto a white cloth and dab at the stain. Be sure to apply pressure in an outward direction so you don't spread stain. Keep repeating this process until the stain has been successfully removed. Follow up by laundering the garment as normal.
