Scissors oil stains on muslin fabrics are not uncommon, especially if you're doing a lot of sewing or crafting. Muslin is a lightweight cotton fabric with a loose and open weave which can make it vulnerable to stains. The good news is that you can get rid of those hard-to-remove oil stains with the following steps.
One of the best ways to remove oily scissor stains from muslin is to use cornstarch. Apply a generous amount of cornstarch over the stained area and let sit for one to two hours. This will help absorb the excess oil from the fabric.
After the cornstarch has been allowed to sit and dry, take a cloth or paper towel dampened with mineral spirits and lightly blot the stained area. Do not rub or scrub. The mineral spirits will help break up the grease and any remaining oil.
Once the stain has been removed, rinse out the fabric with cold water. Then, hang the muslin outside to air-dry. You can also tumble dry the fabric on a low heat setting.
Once the fabric has dried, check for any remaining oil residue. If there are still some stains, repeat process until all of the oil is gone.
Removing scissor oil stains from muslin fabrics doesn't have to be a challenging task. With the right supplies and a little bit of patience, you can easily get rid of those stubborn stains. Just sprinkle some cornstarch over the affected area, use some mineral spirits to blot out residue, rinse and dry, and your muslin should be good as new.
