Oil stains on Merino fabrics can be caused by contact with items like furniture polish, cooking oils, lard, and more. To clean these stains, start by pushing the stained area against itself to transfer any excess oil onto an adjacent dry part of the fabric. The next step is to spray a bit of dishwashing liquid soap directly onto the stain, then blot it up with a clean cloth. If the stain remains after you've blotted the soap, use a dab of rubbing alcohol or vodka on the stain and allow it to sit for about five minutes. Then, rinse the area with warm water and repeat the process if stain persists.
If the stain is still there, check tag on your Merino clothing to make sure it is safe to use an enzyme cleaner. If it is, mix 1 teaspoon of an enzyme cleaner with 1 cup of water and generously spray the stained area. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Finally, place garment in the washing machine and choose a gentle cycle when laundering.
When it comes to oil stains on Merino, prevention is better than cure. Wear protective clothing when cooking or using items like furniture polish and spot treat spills as soon as possible. This will help avoid tricky oil stain removal later on.
