What You Will Need

  • Dry-cleaning solvent
  • Spray bottle
  • Soft-bristled brush
  • Laundry detergent
  • Wool-safe detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Clean cloth
  • Stain remover (optional)

Steps to Remove the Stain

  1. Treat stain as quickly as possible. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to remove.
  2. Lay the garment flat on a surface. It's best to use a white towel as this will help you spot any remaining stains.
  3. Carefully check the clothing label for cleaning instructions. Some items may not be machine washable or require special detergents.
  4. Using a spray bottle, spray a generous amount of dry-cleaning solvent onto the stained area. Allow it to sit for several minutes.
  5. Gently scrub affected area with a soft-bristled brush. This will help to further break down the stain.
  6. Once you are satisfied you have removed as much of the stain as possible, rinse the item in cool water.
  7. If the stain remains, mix together a solution of laundry detergent, a capful of white vinegar, and two cups of cold water. Soak the affected area in this solution for 20-30 minutes.
  8. Rinse area again and inspect the results. If there is still a trace of the stain, use a mild wool-safe detergent and soak for a further 20-30 minutes.
  9. Finally, rinse well and then blot the area with a clean cloth. If the stain persists after all these steps, you can test a small amount of stain remover in an inconspicuous area before attempting to clean the entire garment.
