Step 1: Blot the Stain

Gently pat the stain with a paper towel to blot as much of the oil as possible. Be sure not to rub or scrub the fabric in order to avoid causing further damage. If you have a tissue handy, it's worth trying that too.

Step 2: Apply Talcum Powder

Next, sprinkle talcum powder or cornstarch on the stain and allow it to sit for several hours. The talcum powder will help to draw oil out of the garment.

Step 3: Brush Away the Residue

Once the powder has had time to absorb the oil, brush it away and discard it. Don't forget to check the inside of the garment as well, in case there are any lingering droplets of oil.

Step 4: Heat the Stain

Put a cloth between the material and the underside of an iron. Gently heat the stained area, moving the iron in small circles until oil is gone. Be sure to keep the iron on a low setting and never leave it sitting in one spot for too long.

Step 5: Launder as Usual

Once all the oil has been removed, launder your cocktail dress as you normally would. It's always a good idea to double-check for any remaining oil either before or after washing.
