What You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Soft cloths or sponges
  • Laundry detergent
  • Oxygen-based bleach

Step 1: Create a Vinegar Solution

Combine equal parts white vinegar and water in a container, preferably a bowl or cup. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution and use it to pat the stained area. The vinegar will help to break down the oil-based substances and lift the stain from fabric.

Step 2: Soak the Stained Area

Pour some dish soap on the stained area and rub it in gently. Let the fabric soak for at least 15 minutes in vinegar and soap solution. This will allow the substances in the vinegar and soap to penetrate the fabric and loosen up the stain.

Step 3: Wash the Fabric

Once you have let the fabric soak, rinse out any residue with cold water. Place the fabric in the washing machine and set it on the delicate cycle. Add laundry detergent and oxygen-based bleach to wash. If the stain has not completely gone away, don’t dry fabric yet. Repeat Steps 1–3 until the stain is gone.

Step 4: Dry the Fabric

Once the stain has been removed, tumble dry the fabric on low heat. Be sure to check the fabric periodically until it's completely dry. This will ensure that stain does not reappear.
