The first step to salvaging your tartan dress is to act quickly. As soon as you notice stain, blot it with a dry cloth to absorb as much of dressing as possible. You can then move on to using one of following solutions to remove the rest of stain:

  • Soap and water: Mix together a solution of mild soap and warm water, then apply it to the stain. Rub the material together, then rinse with clean water and allow the garment to air dry.
  • Club soda: Saturate the stain with club soda and rub carefully. The carbonation helps to lift the stain, and this method also works well for wine stains.
  • Laundry detergent: Apply a few drops of liquid laundry detergent to the fabric and rub gently. This loosens up the stain so that it can be lifted away.
  • Vinegar: Mix a solution of equal parts vinegar and cold water, and blot the mixture onto the stain. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water.

No matter which solution you choose, make sure to test it out on a small inconspicuous area of the fabric before applying it to the stain. This helps to ensure that the solution won’t damage the fabric.

Once stain has been removed, wash the fabric in cold water according to care directions on the label. Then, lay it flat to air-dry. Once fabric is completely dry, you’ll be able to enjoy your tartan dress once again!
