As the summer months approach, outdoor entertaining has become a popular activity for friends and family. Enjoying a delicious summer salad with friends is a great way to spend a beautiful day. However, it can also be stressful if you accidentally spill some dressing on your clothing. Cleaning up mess isn't always easy, especially when dealing with certain fabrics like polyester.

What You Need

  • A sponge or soft cloth
  • Neutral detergent
  • Shaving cream
  • A bowl or basin
  • Warm water
  • White vinegar

Instructions

  1. Pour warm water into the bowl or basin until it's 2/3 full.
  2. Mix a teaspoon of neutral detergent and two tablespoons of white vinegar into bowl with the warm water.
  3. Soak the stained area of garment in the mixture for about 30 minutes.
  4. Rinse the area with warm water to remove the soapy solution.
  5. Apply a small amount of shaving cream directly onto stain.
  6. Rub the shaving cream into fabric gently using a soft cloth or sponge.
  7. Rinse off shaving cream with warm water and allow the garment to air-dry.
  8. If needed, repeat steps 1 through 7 as necessary.

Tips and Tricks

  • Be sure to act quickly when dealing with a salad dressing stain on polyester clothing, as the longer it sits, harder it will be to remove.
  • Always check the care label on the garment before you begin looking for ways to clean the stain. Some fabrics may require special care.
  • It's best to avoid using any kind of bleach or bleach-based detergent on polyester.
  • If the stain still persists after multiple attempts at cleaning, take the article of clothing to a professional dry cleaner.
