It’s easy for dressings – creamy or oily – to become embedded in the delicate fibers of a dress, blouse or pants made with peau de soie. But don’t worry - if you take prompt action and use the right cleaning supplies (like a nice polyester-safe detergent), you can usually get out most, if not all of the stain. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Before you try to clean the stain, inspect the care label of your item and determine what type of fabric it is made from. Knowing this information is key to figuring out the best strategy for stain removal.
  • Once you know the fabric type, dampen the stained area with cold water. Don’t scrub or rub the area too aggressively as this can cause fibers to weaken or damage the item.
  • Now, you’re ready to treat the stain with a stain remover. Choose one that is safe for your item’s fabric type. Follow instructions on the product label.
  • If the stain has been successfully removed, hand wash the area with a mild detergent.
  • Once item is cooled and dried, inspect stain. Make sure stain is completely gone before putting it away.

Remember, only attempt these methods on fabrics that are safe for machine washing. Do not attempt these methods on fabrics that require dry cleaning. Also, keep in mind that some fabrics, like wool and silk, could require special treatment and cleaning. If the above methods don’t remove the stain, take your garment to your local dry cleaner.
