When it comes to stains, few are more challenging to remove than those left by oil-based sauces and dressings. Fortunately, there are a few techniques to help make short work of pesky oil stains on oxford shirts.

Step 1: Treat the Stain Immediately

The sooner you act on treating the stain, the better your chances of success. Don’t let the stain set in or dry, as this can make it much harder to remove. Act quickly and be sure to use a gentle approach when blotting the stain.

Step 2: Blot the Stain

To start, take a clean, colorless cloth and blot the stain. Do not rub or scrub the fabric, as this could cause the stain to spread or set more deeply into the material. Simply press gently and continue blotting until no more of stain has transferred onto the cloth.

Step 3: Pretreat Stain

Use a pre-treatment spray or a paste-style cleaner specifically meant for oil-based stains. Follow instructions on product label. Pay special attention to any instructions regarding allowed soaking time before laundering.

Step 4: Launder the Shirt

Once the pretreatment has been applied, launder the oxford shirt as normal. You may opt to use an enzyme-based detergent to give the cleaning process an extra boost, and be sure to set the washing machine to a gentle cycle. Finally, allow the garment to air dry.

Step 5: Check the Stain Before Ironing

Before ironing the oxford shirt, double check for any remaining traces of stain. If you need to, you can apply more pre-treatment before putting the garment back in washing machine.
