If you've ever accidently spilled salad dressing on your hat, you know that getting the stain out isn't always easy. The wrong cleaning method could actually cause the stain to set in permanently, ruining your favorite style. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to clean up mess without damaging your headwear.

Step One: Blot Up Excess Oil

Immediately after spilling salad dressing on your hat, grab a paper towel and blot up any excess oil. Do not rub, as this could damage the fabric or make the stain worse. Blot until you no longer feel any moisture when you press down.

Step Two: Pre-Treat with a Stain Remover

Now that you've blotted up what you can, apply a pre-treater or stain remover to the affected area. This will help break up the oils, making it easier to remove stain. Be sure to use a product that is safe for the type of fabric your hat is made from. If you're not sure what kind of fabric your hat is, check the label before applying any products.

Step Three: Wash with Cold Water

Next, put your hat in a sink full of cold water and let it soak for at least 10 minutes. This will give the stain remover time to work its magic. After the 10 minutes is up, gently rub the area with a cloth or soft brush. Then rinse the hat thoroughly in cold water.

Step Four: Dry and Repeat if Necessary

Once your hat is rinsed, gently squeeze out any excess water and then lay it flat to dry. Once it is completely dry, check to see if stain is still visible. If so, repeat the steps above one more time. This should do the trick!
