The key to removing salad dressing from gingham is to treat the stain quickly. As soon as you or your guest notices the stain, scoop out as much of the excess salad dressing with a spoon as possible. For tougher, caked-on dressing, use a dull knife to carefully remove it without damaging the fabric.
Mix some warm water with a few drops of liquid detergent and dip a washcloth in the solution. Using the cloth, blot at the stain until much of the excess dressing has been removed. Do not rub harshly; be gentle to prevent damaging fabric fibers.
To remove any remaining residue from the dressing stain, pour white vinegar directly onto the fabric and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, rinse the material with cold water until the vinegar smell is completely gone.
If stain has not yet come out after rinsing with vinegar, apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent directly onto the material and gently rub it in. Let the detergent sit for up to 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Repeat steps two and three if necessary.
Once you have tried to treat the stain with all of the above methods, it’s time to wash material in washing machine. Select the warmest water setting and a mild detergent and let it run through the full cycle. Check the stain after washing to make sure it’s gone before drying the material in the dryer. If the stain persists, repeat steps 1-4.
Salad dressing stains don’t have to ruin your gingham fabric. With a few simple steps, you can easily remove these stubborn stains and keep your materials looking brand new. Remember, key is to act fast and treat the stain as soon as you see it.
