Cotton poplin is a lightweight, durable weave that's ideal for clothing, such as shirts and blouses. Unfortunately, its absorbency makes it vulnerable to greasy stains, such as those from salad dressings. But, don't give up hope—there are a few steps you can take to get your poplin looking as good as new.

Step 1: Blot the Stain

As soon as possible after the spill, grab a clean towel or white cloth and use it to blot up as much of the salad dressing as you can. Be sure to press down firmly but gently; don't rub cloth against the fabric as this may spread the stain. Continue blotting until you can't remove any more of the dressing.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Stain

Once you're done blotting, mix together a pre-treatment solution for the stain by combining an equal amount of dishwashing liquid and white vinegar. Dab a little of the solution onto the stain and let sit for about 5 minutes. Then, use a clean cloth or toothbrush to gently scrub the area.

Step 3: Wash the Garment

Place the garment in the washing machine, using cold water and a laundry detergent made for delicate fabrics. If you like, you can also add a liquid laundry booster, such as OxiClean, which can help lift the stubborn stain.

Step 4: Dry the Fabric

Once washing cycle is complete, hang the garment up to dry. Do not put the fabric in the dryer, as this may cause the stain to set in permanently. Instead, air dry the garment and inspect it when it's finished. If the stain has lifted, you can then put garment in the dryer on the lowest setting.

FAQ

Can I use warm water to wash salad dressing stains from cotton poplin?

Will a pre-treatment solution work on other types of fabric?

Yes, this pre-treatment solution can be used on other fabrics as well; just be sure to check the fabric's care instructions first.
