Materials Needed
Before getting started, be sure that you have the following materials on-hand:
- A bucket or basin
- Cold water
- Mild detergent
- White vinegar
- Baking Soda
- Oxygen bleach
- Soft cloths and towel
Instructions for Cleaning
- Locate the stain on the fabric and gently dab it using a soft cloth. Avoid rubbing the cloth onto the stain, as this could cause it to spread or be pushed further into fabric.
- Mix a solution of cold water and mild detergent in the bucket or basin. Make sure the detergent is designed specifically for use on colored fabrics - regular detergents may be too harsh and could damage the fabric.
- Submerge the stained area in cleaning solution and let it soak for 20-30 minutes. Gently swish it around a few times during this time to help loosen the stain.
- Rinse the fabric with cold water and check to see if stain is still present. If so, move on to step 5.
- Mix equal parts white vinegar and baking soda and apply this mixture directly to the stain. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
- If the stain is still visible, mix a solution of oxygen bleach and cold water and apply to the affected area. Let it soak for about 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cold water.
- If stain has not been completely removed, repeat the above process until the stain is gone.
- Once stain has been removed, lay the fabric flat or hang it up to air dry.
Additional Tips
- Pre-treat the stain by moistening a cloth with cold water and dabbing the stain before beginning the cleaning process.
- Always test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of the fabric first to make sure it won't cause any damage.
- Always check the care tag on the clothing before attempting to clean it - some fabrics cannot be machine washed or soaked.
