Using a clean white cloth or paper towel, gently blot the stained area to absorb any excess dressing. Do not scrub, as this can spread the stain further.
Depending on the type of fabric, pre-treat the stain by gently rubbing a small amount of detergent into the stain. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before proceeding to the next step.
Once the pre-treatment has had some time to work, rinse off any residual detergent with cold water. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to ensure all detergent is removed.
Once detergent has been removed, pre-soak the stained item in cold water for 30 minutes to an hour. This will help loosen the stain and allow it to be washed away more easily.
Carefully read the care instructions for the garment, then wash according to the instructions using a detergent safe for the fabric. Make sure to double check that stain has been completely removed before drying in a warm dryer.
Once the garment has been dried, inspect it once again to make sure all of the stain has been removed. If not, repeat steps 1-5 until the garment is stain-free.
If all else fails, spot treat the remaining stain with a specialty stain remover made for the fabric. Apply according to directions and then repeat steps 5 and 6 for best results.
