Before you start cleaning, you must identify what type of salad dressing was spilled. Different dressings contain different oils, which require different treatments. If you're unable to identify the type of dressing from the stain, refer to any leftovers remaining in the bowl. Once you know the type of dressing, you can choose the most appropriate cleaning agent.
Take a soft brush and gently scrub the stained area. This will help to loosen stubborn particles and give your cleaning agent better access to the stain. For best results, pre-treat the stain with a pretreatment spray or a few drops of dishwashing liquid.
Depending on the type of dressing, you may want to use an enzyme cleaner, a white vinegar solution, or a spot-cleaning gel. Work the cleaning agent into stain, taking care not to spread it to other parts of the dress. Allow the cleaning agent to sit for 10–15 minutes.
Use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot the stained area. Take care not to rub the stain, as this may spread it further. Instead, move the cloth in a dabbing motion to absorb as much of the stain as possible.
Rinse the treated area with cold water and repeat steps 3 and 4 if necessary. Refer to the instructions on any cleaning products used to ensure you use them correctly.
Finally, launder the dress according to its care label. Check the stained area before you put dress in the dryer, as heat could cause the stain to become permanent.
