Rust stains are unsightly and can be difficult to remove, especially from delicate fabrics like wool. With the right tools and elbow grease, however, even the toughest rust spots can be removed from your sweaters. Here's how to get started.
Vinegar is a powerful natural cleaning agent and can do wonders for rust stains. To start, fill a large bowl or sink with two cups of white vinegar and one cup of cold water. Soak your sweater for at least fifteen minutes, then rinse and pat the fabric dry.
Next, apply a citrus-based stain remover directly to the rust mark. Follow the package directions on the product for how long you should allow it to sit before rinsing. After the recommended amount of time has passed, launder your sweater as normal.
If the rust stain is still present after the first treatment, don't fret. All you need to do is start process again. Soak the sweater in vinegar for fifteen minutes, then apply a fresh citrus-based cleaner and wash again. With some patience, you should be able to restore the sweater to its former glory.
