The first thing you'll need to do is mix together a solution of equal parts lemon juice and white vinegar. Soak a cloth in this mixture and then gently rub it on the affected area. Make sure you don't scrub too hard or you could damage fabric. Once you're done, rinse the area with cool water and inspect it for any remaining rust stains. If some still remain, repeat the process until all stains are gone.
After you've completely removed the rust stains, you'll want to wash garment separately so it doesn't ruin other items in the laundry cycle. Use a mild detergent with cool water and then lay it flat on a towel or drying rack to air dry. Never put it in the dryer because it could shrink or fade the fabric.
Now your sweater is ready to wear again! With any luck, this rust stain cleaning trick will help you get rid of those pesky marks and make your favorite garment look as good as new.
