What You'll Need

  • Mild detergent
  • Oxalic acid solution (or vinegar)
  • Baking soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide

Directions

  1. Soak the item in a mild detergent and cold water for 10–15 minutes. This will loosen the rust stain.
  2. Mix a solution of oxalic acid and warm water. If your local store does not carry this item, you can use a mixture of 1/4 cup vinegar and 1 cup water instead. Soak the garment in the solution for at least one hour.
  3. Rinse the garment in cold water and dry it thoroughly.
  4. If remaining stains remain, mix a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and apply to the stain area.
  5. Allow the paste to sit for 30 minutes before rinsing. Do not rub or scrub the fabric as this could damage the silk.
  6. Rinse area thoroughly and lay item flat to dry.

Conclusion

Rust stains can be a bummer on delicate silk fabric. But with the right cleaning supplies and the method outlined above, you can easily get rid of them!
